Trunnion for a Military Application

A supplier to the aerospace industry was seeking a manufacturer for the trunnion highlighted here for use in a military application. This cylindrical part had complicated features and close tolerance requirements. The part geometry lent itself well to Swiss-type machining, and because of our recent success in providing high-precision product to this customer, we were called upon to manufacture this part.
We have several Swiss Screw machining centers with various capabilities, which we match to the unique requirements of each product. For this project, we leveraged the features of our Cincom K 16E. Its large tool capacity, flexible tooling layout, and fast processing speed allowed us to develop a methodology for machining the component quickly and cost-effectively, even in low numbers. A high-pressure coolant system, which kept heat from building up in the tools and the workpiece, allowed us to operate the machine at its maximum speed while promoting a higher level of accuracy and repeatability.
Machined from 15-5 precipitation hardened stainless steel, this part featured overall dimensions of .770″ in length x .236″ in diameter. Our machining capabilities allowed us to achieve ±.0001″ tolerances and an exceptional surface finish. On-machine vision inspection combined with caliper and micrometer measurements confirmed we met the client’s high standard of quality. They were very impressed with our ability to supply them with competitively priced, high accuracy parts.
