Medical Machining Services

The medical manufacturing sector uses computer numerical controlled (CNC) machining to create extremely precise components for medical devices and instruments. Since medical device components are often extremely small and complex, efficient computerized manufacturing is typically necessary to achieve the tight tolerance levels required. Precise components with smooth, easily sterilized surfaces are used in a wide variety of medical applications, from surgical instruments to orthotic devices. These devices and their component parts must meet stringent FDA guidelines and industry standards to ensure user safety.

At McCormick Industries, we understand that the medical industry has specific needs and requirements above and beyond normal machining practices. Our ISO 9001:2015-certified facility includes cutting edge Swiss Precision Machining technology capable of producing extremely delicate components with exceptionally tight tolerances.

Machining Capabilities

McCormick’s extensive portfolio of machining services includes CNC Swiss precision machining, CNC turning, and CNC milling.

  • CNC Swiss Machining  Our Swiss precision machining services are particularly useful for medical components—with dimensional tolerances within ±0.0001 inches, we can produce even the smallest components to the highest degree of accuracy. Our Swiss machining equipment includes lathes with up to 9 axes, allowing us to create exceptionally complex parts quickly and precisely.
  • CNC Turning and Milling  Our CNC turning and milling centers allow for fast, repeatable production of complex components with exceptional levels of craftsmanship. As with all of our CNC services, our CNC mills and turning machines are capable of producing complex components with tight tolerances.

Additional Services

In addition to our superior precision machining capabilities, we maintain close working relationships with industry leaders who offer finishing and coating services specific to the medical industry. We can coordinate a variety of specialized outside services that are critical for medical components, such as passivation. Our in-house finishing services include sanding, polishing, and buffing material surfaces to ensure that there are no imperfections to interfere with part sterilization.

Unique Requirements for Medical Machining

Due to the critical nature of medical device components, medical parts manufacturing must exhibit exacting precision. Precision CNC machining is ideal for producing complex medical parts. CNC machined components used in medical equipment can be extremely detailed, and the process allows for an exceptional level of consistency between parts.

At McCormick Industries, we are capable of producing volumes ranging from prototypes used for product development up to full production runs within even the most stringent specifications. Machining medical parts entails the use of a broad range of materials that are specially suited to healthcare applications, and our machining capabilities allow us to create medical components using materials such as:

  • Stainless steel
  • Aluminum
  • Titanium
  • Gold
  • Brass
  • Bronze
  • Medical-grade plastics

With more than 20 years of experience, our highly knowledgeable staff are capable of creating precision medical components to meet a broad range of specifications.

Experience in the Medical Field

As reliable and dedicated medical component suppliers, McCormick Industries offers superior precision components for a variety of medical applications. In a particularly challenging project, we produced a stainless steel mallet shaft from high-strength 17-4 stainless steel for use in surgical applications.

With the correct tooling, our CNC Swiss machines were able to cut the extremely hard material into an intricate design which included precise flanges, fillets, grooves, and radii. The tools and cutting surface were cooled to prevent heat distortion, and the product was thoroughly finished using sanding, polishing, and buffing techniques for a smooth, blemish-free surface. The mallet shaft was completed within exceptionally tight tolerances of ±0.002 inches on the diameter and on all critical features.
